Day 1 | Day 2 | Post Film Festival Reflection

Day 1

What?
  • t-shirts - students loved them
  • introduction with all students watch examples of movies
  • label making - team building (teams made names)
  • child explained rules in for the team building game & teachers played too
  • name building games was great for building sense of community
  • pre-planning of binary opposites was supportive before running workshops with students
  • great for teachers to work with different ages
  • mixed age groups we great - worked well together e.g. (Year 3-5)
  • mixed age groups reinforced empathy, team building, collaboration, leadership
  • all students enjoyed the practical sessions - using the digital cameras etc.
  • juniors often joined up, them split into smaller film teams - worked well
  • teachers have put in their own time to learn programmes, up-skilling themselves and using in the programmes
  • workshops took pressure off - e.g. only need to learn one thing
  • groups of 5-6 students for film crews/teams worked well
  • junior students picked up angles and shots well - and were confident to experiment

So What?
  • introduction too wordy for juniors
  • team building game - explain in more detail
  • editing, cameras and sound was difficult in the time frame
  • spread the leadership role (introducing aspects of the day)
  • communication channels - contribution to the Google Docs
  • workshop then concept building - was that the right way round?
  • equipment requirements need to be conveyed & confirmed before the film festival

Now What? - Future Focused Ideas
  • teachers do either the film workshop or the emotive photography workshop - to avoid overloading teachers
  • time frames were challenger - but the time constraints really focus the students and keeps them focused
  • break editing into different work shops e.g. sounds, split scenes etc.
  • use movies made this year as examples for next year
  • junior teachers stay all day next year (although morning was enough for the students)
  • contribute constructive dialogue to support next steps/solve problems - start dialogue with a solution not a problem
  • jigsaw - students explain the knowledge gained through their workshop before starting the project OR share on the job
  • concept building first then workshop
  • ensure music used is created by students or royalty free to protect copyright

Day 2

What?
  • problem solving issues meant everyone involved -teachers and kids able to come up with alternatives
  • good coffee/biscuits/milo -yum
  • home made cake (for teachers) -kindness and appreciation of effort is gratefully received
  • collaboration with other teachers is great -feeding ideas off each other and recognising others strengths
  • breaks down barriers between schools for kids and teachers
  • opens up the 'hauora' of the teachers involved allowing more open dialogue
  • breaks down our insular tendencies
  • building connectedness and teamwork is fab (kids and teachers)
  • genuine excitement and pride in the process outcomes (i.e in the small steps -individual photos, the construction of props etc before final product)
  • huge learning curves in teacher professional learning in the connecting, facilitating, collaborating, leadershipping, creativity and making... a double edged knife
  • team building games to restart the day
  • sharing junior photos with seniors and seniors work with juniors
  • celebrating documentary crews work
  • documentary crew providing great information and data on the process

So what?
  • facilitation was difficult as pressure went on to get footage -became more teacher directed (first year issue?)
  • still potential for not enough support to teachers if the 'floating teachers' get tied up with issues
  • new technology causing some stressful issues due to taking on 'teachable moments'
  • storyboarding took longer than expected
  • professional learning on the go is stressful
  • we didn't forsee some issues
  • age/ability range of kids in the 3 year (e.g 0-2, 3-5, 6-8) groups was vast
  • some feelings of hopelessness -worried about completion, having to re-shoot, broken props, learning the ins and outs of some programmes (...more than we signed up for?)
  • some feelings of pride and natural competition having to be consciously dealt with
  • worried about outcomes -what will parents think if the projects don't come together?
  • yesterday feels like it was easy now! (how will we feel at the end?)
  • how will we judge if the projects are only finished 1 hour before parents arrive?

Now what?
  • more teachers may enable teachers to see what is going on in other groups e.g 2 teachers in each group-this would enable teachers to develop their 21st century teaching learning skills
  • if we had our original support: teacher ratio we would have 2 extra teachers available to problem solve
  • do we need to ensure there is time for practicing the skills so the creativity is not constrained (an extra day for 'training' before starting the creative process?)
  • do we need to be 'simpler'in our choice of tools/ in our choice of outcomes?
  • need a day between end of project and premiere for judging
  • is animation the right tool to include? iMovie 08 is easier for animation than 09
  • some teachers out of their teaching level found it more difficult to understand the level the kids are coming from
  • could we change yr groups to 0-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-7 as the age/ability range was vast
  • could we bring in yr8 students as group mentors?
  • worried about the lack of de-briefing at end of day (only some teachers able to stay)
  • need to ensure there is an expectation that teachers are available for an extra hour at end of days for de-brief.
  • cost cutting meant we have not budgeted for a half day for all teachers on Friday (at end of project) to sit down together. This is a mistake, and needs to be budgeted for in the future
  • I wonder if the creative process always calm - storm - calm?
  • this is a 'work in progress' but will it be perceived like that? will the outcomes be judged too harshly?
  • have we got the 'awards' right? Should we have included creativity of props, settings...

Post Film Festival Reflection

  • post Film Festival survey now needs to be completed then to be analysed and added to the wiki
  • pre survey now needs to be analysed and added to the wiki
  • add rating system to student voice - voicethread comments was the genuine part - a rating would help analyse data - now need to send it out to those schools/students who were involved - survey monkey?
  • tools issue - for tutorials - introduced screen shot to make tutorials (not enough known about it) so tutorials need to be worked on
  • premiere to be slicker next year - the window for most people - bigger venue e.g. movie theatre
  • it was pressured trying to judge before the film premiere - premiere would probably be better the day after the Film Festival
  • communication - need regular stops to touch base with all the student teams and their teachers so that everyone is aware of deadlines or changes (did on everyday except the last - due to pressure of completing films
  • groups became insular - because of the dead line need to show work in progression - in a camp scenario we could share in the evening
  • collegiality amongst students & staff would be stronger in a camp scenario
  • good job of building the sense of 'team' through games, t-shirts, group names etc.
  • group names - should have been used more rather e.g. Karilyn's Team
  • team building afternoon for the kids pre festival
  • wiki space for the documentary - next year use the blog for more students involved - plenty of computers around for students to blog at any point during the festival
  • expert and non-expert teacher for each group in order to provided more support and professional development for teachers
  • students are still the focus of the film festival
  • expert teachers need to be available to support classroom teachers but when not needed there are other tasks e.g. tutorials, supporting the documentary team
  • expert and non-expert teacher to work with the documentary team (so expert teacher is free to support others too)
  • great to have Zac supporting teachers e.g. helping with technical issues and making the odd cup of tea - teacher's appreciated the support & Karilyn's cake/shared lunch - big thanks
  • morning tea for Tahunanui Teachers for using the school and it's facilities - was apprciated
